To see a glacier at close range is one thing, but to walk on its surface is quite another. With the security of foot crampons, placing each step firmly down with a crunch into crisp surface snow as you walk pass by a vertically-walled crevasse to your right or left that drops down maybe a hundred metres is humbling, exhilarating and an adrenaline rush. The intense blue colours, the running of water from ice melt and the intermittent crack as the glacier moves all combine to the feeling of being at the mercy of Mother Nature.
