Introduction
El Pangue Lodge comprises a number of independent, self-catering cabins, a “club house” and an outdoor, heated pool all set in a Patagonian valley surrounded by nature and beside the Risopatron lake, 28km south of La Junta and 18km north of Puyuhuapi village. As they say themselves, this is an “oasis” of calm and tranquillity.
About
The El Pangue lodge offers various, self-contained, wooden-constructed cabins with bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and dining areas. In addition, there is a main house where there is a restaurant, fireplace living room and games room.
The cabins range from a studio design to three-bedroom options, each emitting a cosy ambience. Breakfast can be included in the service if required.
These accommodation units are spread around the grounds where there are native trees and gardens in-between.
Swimming Pool
Among the facilities at El Pangue is a heated, outdoor swimming pool, which is 18 meters long and semi-covered. This allows one to be in the pool as well as enjoy the fresh Patagonian air and landscape. El Pangue will provide towels for the pool area.
Quincho
A Quincho in these parts means barbecue area. The El Pangue quincho is built in the Patagonian style, and used often to roast lamb on the spit, prepared in the style of the inhabitants of Patagonia.
A stay here is really to relax and maybe walk some of the trails, fly fish, soak in the outdoor, heated pool or jacuzzi and perhaps go boating on the lake. It also serves as a great logistical stop off when driving either way along the Carretera Austral between Caleta Conzalo or Futaleufu to Coyhaique.
El Pangue Lodge offers these activities to guests:
Trekking
Amid the forest there are trees that include coigues, myrtles, luma, canelos, and tepas, some of which are older than 100 years.
The rain forest also contains a rich variety of undergrowth such as ferns, mosses, and lichens, as well as the giant Nalca (the plant with massive leaves) plant that grow throughout the area.
In addition to the abundant vegetation the forest is home to many birds including the Magellan woodpecker, patio, huet-huet, kingfisher and chucao.
Kayaking
The nearby Risopatrón Lake is an ideal place for water sports due to its calm waters and length of around 12 kilometres, in addition, the El Pangue Lodge offers one of the few access points to this lake. The lodge has single and double kayaks with the skirt, paddles, and safety gear too.
Necessary equipment: Windbreaker and water bottle.
Fishing
Where El Pangue is located it is surrounded by dense, evergreen forest, and untouched, pristine landscapes that are populated by clear rivers ideal for fly fishing.
Fishing is also offered at the nearby Risopatron Lake where there are Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and salmon.
If you are not an expert fly-fisherman, the lodge will arrange for a fly-fishing course. The course begins with an introductory casting class in the lodge's man-made lagoon. Once participants feel confident, they can move on to the Lake Risopatron and try their hand in a more challenging situation.
The Trails
The trails are clearly signposted, and these are:
Sendero del Río Trail:
- Duration: Half Day
- Length: Approximately 3km
- Difficulty level: Low
- Necessary Equipment: Raincoat and water-proof boots on rainy days.
Description
This trail borders the wooded banks of the Risopatrón river. On this walk, you can discover the intensity of the Patagonian temperate rain forest.
When this trail was constructed, it was done in such a way as to not intrude or damage the local nature. Therefore, the riverbank contour was the basis for the path and any trees that were “in the way” were respected.
Along this trail you can see a large variety of birds and trees, some of which date back 100 years. Among the trees are large Coigues, Tepas and the reddish Arrayanes.
Hopefully you will see birds such as the Chucao, or the coveted Magellanic Woodpecker.
Considering that the trail is right on the edge of the Risopatrón River, and that the flow and course often changes, it was necessary to build around 36 small, wooden bridges to keep the trail intact. Perhaps the most interesting bridge is the one that goes “through the treetops” and across the Risopatrón river.
Sendero Laguna los Pumas Trail
- Duration: 1 Day.
- Length: 5km approximately.
- Difficulty level: High.
- Equipment Needed: Small backpack, bottle of water, water-proof trekking shoes and water-proof jacket if rainy.
Description
The Los Pumas Lagoon is to be found at altitude, at the top of a hill located within the Queulat National Park. The start of the trail is located 5km south of El Pangue Lodge along the Carretera Austral.
The first sector of the trail zig-zags up the hill until you get to a gate and this is where the lagoon is located.
Because this area is higher than the valley floor, the forest and vegetation is different to that found at the lower altitude. Also, any trail that ascends requires some kind of extra effort and this trail is no exception. Many steps need to be navigated; therefore this is not a suitable trail for anyone who may have a knee issue or who is not particularly fit.
Sendero Miradores Trail
- Duration: 1.5 hrs.
- Length: 400m approximately.
- Difficulty Level: Medium.
- Necessary Equipment: Rain coat and water-proof boots on rainy days.
Description
This trail is at a higher elevation that the other trails and offers a number of viewpoints, hence the name “mirador” (which means viewpoint). On this trail you can also see large trees and the famous Nalca plant, as well as incredible panoramic views of the valley where the Lodge is located.
In order to get to the start, you will need to cross a beautiful boardwalk that crosses the Risopatrón river.
