This is a very long, full-day excursion that will take you into one of the remotest, pristine places on Earth at the southern-most tip of the American continent. For example, Humpback whales, sea lions, cormorants, dolphins; native forests; glaciers and clean air! Trek Hito XXIV, Tierra del Fuego National Park, Ushuaia, Patagonia

Introduction

The Hito is the name of a marker that depicts the border between Argentina and Chile. It’s remarkable that all there is to mark an invisible border line are a number of marker posts, distributed at intervals along the “line”. The one that sits on the beach, where this trail ends, is called Hito XXIV, hence the name of this trail.

It is an easy walk, mostly level.

Sendero de la Costa Trek, Tierra del Fuego National Park, Ushuaia, Patagonia

Introduction

The name of this trail “Sendero de la Costa” basically tells you what it is, which is a trekking trail that follows the coastal path of the Beagle Channel that also connects Enseñdada Bay with Lapataia Bay.

It is not difficult and offers a nice walk amid natural surroundings.

The Cerro Guanaco Trek, Tierra del Fuego National Park, Ushuaia, Patagonia

Introduction

This is one of the more demanding treks in the National Park because it requires a steady, uphill climb to 1,000m above sea level. The trek will go through a Lenga forest, but also over muddy, difficult sectors where exposed roots and wet soil make for a difficult and, sometimes messy, walk.

After the forest the are is exposed, just before reaching the summit. However, once at the top you will, on a clear day, receive wonderful views over the Beagle channel and the Navarino Island opposite.

Introduction

The Bahia Lapataia trek is more of a nice walk that takes you past the Beagle Channel passing nice, natural sights.

Catamaran Navigation into the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia, Patagonia

Introduction

Close to the port are numerous catamarans that operate a half-day tour into the Beagle Channel to see the marine wildlife such as sea lions, cormorants, penguins and to visit one of the oldest estancias in the area.

The catamaran is well-designed in terms of viewing from inside or outside on deck, the tour, with guided commentary, passes by cormorant and sea lion colonies and on some other tours, you will see penguins.

On the tour, that sometimes includes a stop off on an island, you will disembark and be able to walk around the island, which gives you the feeling that you are in the middle of the Beagle Channel. From here you can admire the surrounding beauty of the area, the Andes mountains, Ushuaia on one side and the Chilean island of Navarino on the other side.

Excellent for photo opportunities of marine life. Coffee and biscuits served on board.

The navigation will pass by the historically famous Ushuaia lighthouse.

Trekking and Canoe Activity in Tierra del Fuego National Park

Introduction

This is full day activity involving a long walk within the Tierra del Fuego National Park and also navigating an inflatable canoe on a river to pass directly through the natural wilderness. The river route will take you to places that are inaccessible by road or footpath and enable you to see landscapes that have not changed since the days of the indigenous Yamana settlers were living in this region.

This is an opportunity to be transported into the backcountry behind Ushuaia in an off road 4 x 4 jeep. Introduction

If you are relaxing in Puerto Natales or have a few hours to kill, a visit to the Milodon cave is well worth a visit. This is a spacious cave that penetrates a couple of hundred metres into conglomerate rock. Formed millions of years in the past, the cave is called the “Milodon” after a prehistoric creature whose bones were found in the cave. There is a sculpture of the creature that stands near the entrance.

Conglomerate rock is comprised of millions of pebbles and small stones that were brought down with the river or rivers and deposited over millions of years, layer over layer, to be mixed with sediment and compressed with considerable force into a kind of natural concrete.

Perito Moreno Glacier Mini Trek Ice Hike

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in the Southern Patagonian Ice field. One of the great benefits of coming to see this glacier is that it can be viewed relatively easily from viewing points on dry land that are opposite the glacial face.

From the viewing platforms the Glacier stretches back up and into the mountains for some 30km. The glacial face has a width of about 5km and the height of the glacial sector above water is around 60mts – however, much more of it is under the water.

As a result of the combination of these vast dimensions the view is absolutely stunning. However, for those who want to get closer to this giant river of ice, you can walk on top! Here we explain a little about the full-day ice hike called “Mini Trek”.

Perito Moreno Glacier Big Ice Hike

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in the Southern Patagonian Ice field. Moreover, it can be viewed relatively easily from viewing points on dry land that are opposite the glacial face. Most impressively, from here it stretches back up and into the mountains for some 30km.

The glacial face is about 5km wide and the height of the glacial wall above water is around 60mts – with much more of it under the water. Without a doubt it is this combination of vast dimensions makes for a jaw-dropping spectacle. There are various ways to enjoy Perito Moreno, from a simple half day excursion to view it from dry land to walking on its surface or climbing down into it, which is explained here below.

Perito Moreno Glacier Full Day Excursion

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in the Southern Patagonian Ice field. It can be viewed relatively easily from viewing points on dry land that are opposite the glacial face. Most compelling from this vantage point is that you can see it stretch back up and into the mountains for some 30km. At its “front end”, the glacial face is about 5km wide, with a vertical ice wall above water reaching heights of around 60mts – with much more of it under the water.

El Calafate Perito Moreno Glacier
Safari Nautico

This excursion can be taken during the regular Perito Moreno Excursion. It is a boat trip that crosses Lake Rico, passing any icebergs that have calved off from the Perito Moreno glacier. Upon reaching the “Icebergs Channel” the boat will stop at a safe distance from the Perito Moreno glacier before continuing to navigate along and opposite its glacial wall. The boat used for this excursion is the Yagan with a capacity to carry up to 130 passengers. Clients will be taken to the embarkation point at the “Bajo de las Sombras” bay located about 6km before the Perito Moreno glacier viewing points. Navigations are at hourly departures between 10:00hrs to 16:00hrs.

If you fancy a half-day, exhilarating activity and / or an add-on to your W Trek in Torres del Paine National Park, then paddling your own kayak close to Glacier Grey and its icebergs is a great way to enjoy your time in Torres del Paine.

Kayak is on Grey Lake in front of Glacier Grey and operated from the base near to Refugio Grey. For this activity reservations in advance are required. Information on times as well as duration is shown below. Usually people will build the kayak into their W trek itinerary, or we can arrange to bring you over from Hotel Grey early am whereupon you can do the activity and the return later PM to Hotel Grey, from which we can arrange transfers from and back to Puerto Natales as well. However, the only issue with coming from Hotel Grey is that should the wind speed pick up the boat crossing can be cancelled or delayed and in such circumstances, this would affect the ability for you to do kayak.

Description

From here, your eyes will record the first of the many picture postcards that you will treasure from Torres del Paine National Park.

Lake Sarmiento is 90 square kilometres in size and, unlike other lakes of glacial origin present in the park, this one owes its origin to the rains that gave it the intense blue colour that we now admire.

Sarmiento Lake and Laguna Amarga belong to the same basin hemmed in by glacial moraine. Its base comprises the rocks of the Cerro Toro Formation.

Description

Laguna Amarga is a small lake, located outside the eastern limit of Torres del Paine National Park, about 5km from Lake Sarmiento. Both belong to the same basin closed in by glacial moraine. Its base comprises the rocks of the Cerro Toro Formation.

Named the “mirador”, which means viewpoint, and “laguna amarga”, which means bitter lake, the water is a bluish-green colour and got its name from the high pH in the water. And those white stones that crown its banks are stromatolites of calcium carbonate, rock formations present in few places in the world.

Description

From there you can see wide views of the park and it is possible to spot different birds, including the condor.

The viewpoint is always visible from below which will facilitate the hike, although the path is easy to follow.

From the lookout you will have beautiful views over the Pehoé and Nordenskjöld lakes, the Pincol and Negra lagoons and the Paine massif.

The southern ice field can also be seen in the distance.

Description

The start of this trek is from the Estancia (Hosteria) Mirador del Paine – which is technically outside the Park and will required transport to get here. The trek takes about 2.5hrs and offers a great view of Lago Toro and a panoramic view of the Torres del Paine Massif, glaciers and other mountains. It ends in the Park not far from the Weber bridge. Therefore, you will need to be met at the end point.

At the start of this trek you will pass by the Laguna Verde and then walk through a Lenga and Coigue forest. You may see ducks, frogs, woodpeckers, condors, and possibly local bird species like jargon and Cachaña.

After 2 hrs walking, you will reach the Onda Lagoon, and you will be able to look over the Baguales mountain range and the Cuenos del Paine.

From here you will cross over towards the western section of the park and continue on through to the Ciervos lagoon and reach the Toro lookout at 559m where you will get an incredible view of Lake Toro, the Paine river, Serrano Valley, Mount Balmaceda, the Geike and Tyndall glaciers and the southern Patagonian ice field, you will continue de path until the Weber bridge and the trek will be finish.

Description

This start is located about 1km up the track from Pudeto (from where the catamaran operates). Salto Grande means Large Waterfall. Most importantly, the viewing area is very close to the action and offers people the opportunity to see the power, and hear the mighty rumble of vast volumes of water cascading through a narrow gap and then thunder down to the drop some 30mts below. However, be alert because one can easily slip over the edge! This is a beautiful waterfall that connects Lago Pehoe and Lago Toro. From this place, the hike is a simple trek that offers a direct and “close up” view of the Cuernos of Paine.

After walking about one hour you will arrive at the viewpoint (mirador) and get an impressive view of Lake Nordenskjöld, with the Cuernos the other side, dominating the skyline in all their magnitude. On the left, you will get an excellent view of the Paine Grande Mountain and to the right of Almirante Nieto Mountain, and these are the two “Cuernos” of Paine.

Description

A wonderful and unforgettable excursion that connects two of the four entrances that the Torres del Paine National Park has, allowing you to see and experience lots of wildlife.

From the moment of entering the park through the Portería Lago Sarmiento, you will start the trail with a slight inclination that offers a lateral view of Lake Sarmiento, which is the preferred hunting area for the puma. Also, from here you will have a spectacular view of the Torres del Paine massif.

After an hour of walking you will arrive to a rocky conglomerate where there are more than 20 cave paintings that date back around 6,000 years ago. The activity continues towards Laguna Blanquillos, which is a nesting and feeding place for different endemic bird species in Patagonia

After 3 hours of walking you will arrive at the main access to the Torres del Paine National Park: the Laguna Amarga entrance.

Description

This trail starts at a point to Guardaría Grey in the west section of the park, just in front of the Pingo restaurant and the entrance to Grey beach. After walking for almost 1 hour, you will enter the Pingo Valley, which is one of the last places of pristine beauty with almost no human intervention. Also, this area was not touched by previous park fires, thus keeping the flora and fauna intact.

As you walk through the forest there will be ascents and descents, but when you get to a clearing in the woods you will receive a different perspective of the Paine Range. Also, with some luck you may be able to see flora and fauna that is quite different from that found in the rest of the park.

After walking between 2 and 2.5 hours, you will arrive at the viewpoint of the Pingo Cascade (Pingo Waterfall). At this point you can rest for lunch before returning by the same trail back to the start.
