Three Full Day Options from Refugio Grey in Torres del Paine
The ice hike on Glacier Grey in Torres del Paine is an ideal add-on to your W Trek or as a separate activity. Walking on millennium ice has its thrills and is, perhaps, one of the most invigorating activities one can participate in.
Experiencechile.org offers ice hiking on Glacier Grey with our ice-hike partners that specialize in this activity and have the concession to operate it. Clients should, however, be aware that this activity requires fitness and an appreciation for personal safety.
Check-in is at a lodge close to Refugio Grey, in the western end of the W Trek in Torres del Paine.
If you have not stayed overnight at Refugio Grey, to get here you need to either walk 4hrs from Refugio Paine Grande or come across on the Navigation Grey boat from Hotel Grey.

Grey Ice Hike Program One
Ice Hike “Over glacier Grey, tongue of the Southern ice field”
Clients will meet their guides at the Ice Hike Refugio next to Refugio Glacier Grey, where they will receive their personal equipment and then take a boat across the lake to the front of the glacier. After a 20-minute walk through a moraine toward the edge of ice, the guides
will fit clients with crampons and share safety information, equipment advice and ice-walking techniques. During the next two hours, the group will see different ice shapes and receive information about the ice formations, the movement of the glaciers and the effects of global warming.

- 9:00 A.M. Navigate toward access to the ice in the Refugio Rutaspatagonia boat
- 9:30 A.M. Walk across a moraine
- 9:50 A.M. Adjust personal equipment and receive technical information
- 10:20 A.M. Start walking across the ice

Grey Ice Hike Program Two
Ice Hike and Boat Navigation “Over glacier Grey, tongue of the Southern ice field”
Clients will check in at 7 a.m. at the reception of Hostería Lago Grey. They depart on the Grey II boat at 8 a.m. and head for the boat which carries them toward the access point of the ice. After a 20-minute walk through a moraine toward the edge of ice, the guides will fit clients with crampons and share safety information, equipment advice and ice-walking techniques. During the next two hours, the group will see different ice shapes and receive information about the ice formations, the movement of the glaciers and the effects of global warming.

- 12:45 A.M. Take a boat to connect with the Grey II boat
- 1:30 P.M. Take the Grey II boat to Hostería Lago Grey

Grey Ice Hike Program Three
Ice Hike & Climbing “On the Southern Patagonian Ice Field”
Professional climbing guides will lead clients on a two-and-a-half hour exploration of the impressive ice formations on the most important tongue of the Southern Patagonia Ice Field in the Torres del Paine National Park, the Grey Glacier. Equipped with crampons, harnesses, ice axes and cords, participants will get to walk on one of the largest ice reserves on the planet.
After enjoying the glacier and its formations, the guides will choose a wall on which to implement a top rope system. Participants will practice vertical ice climbing and will also enjoy a snack and hot drinks prepared by the guides.
Itinerary
- 1:30 P.M. Check in at the Ice Hike Refugio next to Refugio Grey.
- 2:30 P.M. Depart in boat to the access point to the ice
- 2:45 P.M. Walk across the moraine
- 3:15 P.M. Adjust personal equipment and receive technical information
- 3:45 P.M. Start walking across the ice
- 6:00 P.M. Begin ice climbing
- 7:15 P.M. Take a boat back
- A breathable under vest, breathable DRY FIT (NOT COTTON because it needs to dry quickly) over vest or t-shirt, or long-sleeved
- Breathable top such as a fleece.
- Then a waterproof BREATHABLE WINDBREAKER, over jacket.
- Trousers (or pants if you are American) that are waterproof.
- Study, but comfortable and WATERPROOF hiking boots with NO SLIP under sole.
- You will also need a warm hat, gloves, sunglasses, sun-protection cream and a ruck sack.
- You will be provided with ice crampons, ice axe and hard hat.
