The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in the Southern Patagonian Ice field. Moreover, it can be viewed relatively easily from viewing points on dry land that are opposite the glacial face. Most impressively, from here it stretches back up and into the mountains for some 30km.
The glacial face is about 5km wide and the height of the glacial wall above water is around 60mts – with much more of it under the water. Without a doubt it is this combination of vast dimensions makes for a jaw-dropping spectacle. There are various ways to enjoy Perito Moreno, from a simple half day excursion to view it from dry land to walking on its surface or climbing down into it, which is explained here below.
- Hike into Perito Moreno Glacier - Full Day
- Pick-up from your hotel: 07:00hrs – 07:30hrs / Return 19:00hrs
Description
The excursion begins at Puerto “Bajo de las Sombras” (Port Under the Shadows - a point located about 6km before where the main viewing platforms are located to see Glacier Perito Moreno), where the boat departs to cross the “Brazo Rico” lake for a 20 min trip to the southern side of Glacier Perito Moreno. This short navigation will pass by the southern glacial face and meander through the iceberg channel.
Upon arrival to the shore, clients will disembark and will walk for about 20 mins to a refugio where the guides will organize people into groups of around twenty. Once everyone is settled the groups will then begin to walk towards the glacier for about another 20 minutes to an area bordering the river of ice. At this point, the guides will fit people with crampons and give instruction on how to walk on the ice. During the hike, your designated group guide will explain how the various ice formations are created, such as the crevasses, caves and lagoons. The guide will always lead you. The hike will last for around 3 hours, during which time lunch will be taken into the glacier.
