Trek Hito XXIV, Tierra del Fuego National Park, Ushuaia, Patagonia

Introduction

The Hito is the name of a marker that depicts the border between Argentina and Chile. It’s remarkable that all there is to mark an invisible border line are a number of marker posts, distributed at intervals along the “line”. The one that sits on the beach, where this trail ends, is called Hito XXIV, hence the name of this trail.

It is an easy walk, mostly level.

Description

The “Hito XXIV” is the last of the 24 geodesic points that define the border between Argentina and Chile on the island of Tierra del Fuego. The first is in the northernmost point on the island, and this is the last point at the south of Tierra del Fuego.

The trekking route begins at Acigami Lake (formerly Roca Lake)  from where there is a well-marked path. The trail will take you to the lake until you reach a crossroad where the path will deviate. One path will now lead to the ascent of Cerro Guanaco, and the other will lead to the beach and the border post marker “Hito XXIV”.

The entire trail continues bordering the Acigami Lake until it reaches the “Hito XXIV”, consequently it will remain reasonably flat.

It is a simple and low difficulty route, and therefore ideal to do as a family or with children, although in some areas there will natural obstacles such as a fallen tree.
