This combination of Santiago, Wine and Valparaiso is a great way to start or end your South American itinerary. It will include a night in Santiago, two nights at a wine hotel with tour of the winery and tasting included and then two nights at the historic port city of Valparaiso. This itinerary can also be broken into wine visit only and / or Valparaiso visit only.
Santiago
Santiago is the Capital of Chile (Santiago de Chile). It is a modern, bustling and dynamic city surrounded by the huge, glaciated, snow-covered Andes mountains to the east and coastal mountains to the west, creating a stunning spectacle on a clear day. Your first night here will be to adjust to arriving in Chile and the following morning a short tour.
Casablanca Valley
To the west of Santiago towards the port of Valparaiso lies the Casablanca Valley. Only planted in the 1980’s this 4,000-hectare area is influenced by the natural, cool breeze from the Pacific Ocean, higher rain fall (550mm on average per year) and a 20% risk of frost. The grapes that grow best in these conditions are the whites of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Our partner winery is located just off the main Casablanca valley and comprises a colonial-style hotel, its own a quiet, rural valley, modern wine-making facility and a restaurant located in a quiet garden setting.
Valparaiso
Valparaiso, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site is the only city in Chile that exudes some real history and an interesting vibrancy. The main areas of interest – Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepcion – offer streets lined with wonderful, old English-style buildings from a previously affluent era. Most of these houses are still lived in while some have been converted into hotels. At street level there are boutique cafes, restaurants, and artisanal shops. On some of the general exterior walls are impressive artistic murals, whilst many of the outside walls of the houses have been painted in contrasting bright colours that give life to this neighbourhood. Indeed, it is this picture that creates the charm of the place and why people “love it”. Although the port is less active than in its heyday it is nevertheless still an essential port of entry and export for goods coming in and going out of the country. It is also a stop off point for the increasing numbers of cruise ships that visit Chile.
