Definition of Serviced Camping
Sleeping Bag, Tent and Ground Mattress
Beside each refugio is a camping area. These camping sites ARE SERVICED CAMP SITES and offer bathroom (toilet) facilities, tent rental, ground mattress rental, food supplies and sheltered cooking areas. There is also WC and bathroom facilities.
Camping areas or camping sites that are NOT next to a refugio are only camping areas and nothing more than that and at these places you need to bring your own tent, ground mat, cooking gear and food.
At Camping Central, Chileno, Cuernos, Frances and Seron you will find platforms, upon which the tents are pitched.
- The tent will be set up for you, in advance.
- You have no need to lug your own tent and camping gear on the trail with you.
Food
You will need to pay for food separately when you are at the refugios unless you have booked full board in advance (and most people do so). The cost for meals varies from refugio to refugio.
Full board means: hot dinner, breakfast and box lunch to go (in that order).
ExperienceChile.Org only arranges full-board programs that include all meals.
The serviced camp sites are called:
- Camping Central, next to Refugio Central (W Trek)
- Camping Seron (Circuit Trek)
- Camping Dickson, next to Refugio Dickson (Circuit Trek)
- Camping Perros, (Circuit Trek)
- Camping Grey, next to Refugio Grey (W Trek)
- Camping Paine Grande, next to Refugio Paine Grande (W Trek)
- Camping Frances (W Trek)
- Camping Cuernos, next to Refugio Cuernos (W Trek)
- Camping Chileno, next to Refugio Chileno (W Trek)
The serviced campsites at Chileno, Frances and Cuernos require that tents are pitched upon the wooden platforms provided. If trekkers bring their own tents they will need extra rope to rig their tents on the ground and they may struggle to pitch their tents. The advice is to not bring your own tent and just rent the tent and other equipment (if required) by way of a reservation in advance (which ExperienceChile.Org can arrange).
However, the downside to camping on the provided wooden platforms is that you will, in some cases, be next to the refugio and this often means lots of noise from whatever is going on inside the refugio.
Camping at Paine Grande is very crowded and does not have much shelter from the wind.
