Introduction

The Carretera Austral starts at Puerto Montt, or the nearby village of Puerto Varas, and runs south for 1,241km until it reaches the tiny village of Villa O’Higgins.

The northern part of the road begins in the southern part of the Chilean Lake Region, with its lakes and green forests, then as it continues further south, it gets into the “deeper” parts of Patagonia where the scenery changes to steep-sided fiords, fast running rivers and an overall more “rugged” terrain.

Along the route are numerous stop-off places, and here below we mention 19 of them. Some of these destinations merit a few nights stay, others are just for passing through.

You can click through to individual pages for each destination.

North to South Sector 2

It is possible to fly into Balmaceda airport (Coyhaique) and then drive south to the end of the Carretera Austral in this, our sector 2, which is entirely within the in the Aysen province.

This sector includes the southern sector of the Chilean Lake Region and then enters into the province called Aysen.

South to North Sector 3

Our Sector 3 is for those who wish to arrive to Balmaceda airport at Coyhaique and then travel north, “up” the Carretera Austral, ending at Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas. Navigating the route in this way means that initially you will be in the Aysen Region before entering into the southern sector of the Chilean Lake Region.
