Introduction
There are two point of entry to the Carretera Austral. One is access from the northern end, which means Puerto Montt, or Puerto Varas – which is a “stones throw” from Puerto Montt. The other is to arrive, almost in the middle of the route, to Coyhaique.
Arriving to Puerto Montt
There are regular flights from Santiago as well as the option to drive all the way from Santiago, or wherever else you may be in Chile, to Puerto Montt.
Flight time from Santiago is a little under 2hrs.
Arriving to Coyhaique
There are regular flights from Santiago.
Flight time from Santiago is a little under 3hrs.
Transport
Once you arrive to either Puerto Montt or Coyhaique you will then need a vehicle, which ExperienceChile.Org will arrange, or an itinerary that includes transport as part of the plan, again, ExperienceChile.Org will arrange this.
