Caleta Gonzalo, Parque Pumalin,
Carretera Austral, Patagonia

Inspected By Experience Chile

Introduction

The Caleta Gonzalo cabins were originally constructed and built at this location by the foundation run by Douglas Tomkins and his wife Kris. Unfortunately, Douglas died in a kayaking accident on Lake General Carrera in 2015, further down the Carretera Austral.

Douglas and Kristine Tompkins were successful clothes retail entrepreneurs who developed and later sold “the North Face” and “Esprit” brands. With their money they sought to purchase vast areas of natural wilderness with a view to protecting these areas from the destruction that comes along with development and man’s incursion.

One of the first parks in Chilean Patagonia that Douglas and Kris purchased was the “Parque Pumalin”. This is now one of the 17 National Parks that form the Route of the Parks.

They set up several foundations, however, in 2019 they merged these bodies into one entity and created the Tompkins Conservation Foundation. This is an environmental, eco conservation organisation.

The Tompkins Conservation Foundation

https://www.tompkinsconservation.org

About

The Cabins at Caleta Gonzalo look, on the outside, to be simple, rustic buildings. However, the interiors have been created very much in the North American, lodge style, using quality materials and decorated in the North American way. The wooden floors and wooden walls combine beautifully with the choice of bedding materials to create a very comfortable atmosphere inside.

In addition to the cabins there is also a cafeteria, also created to reflect a high quality interior.

Although these cabins were administered by the Tomkins Foundation, they are now administered by the Chilean National Park organisation known as CONAF.

The hotel enjoys a privileged position within a 5 hectare nature reserve, surrounded by a centennial, Fueguian forest comprising Ñires, Lenga (Beech), sour cherry and Southern beech trees. Also, due to its elevation halfway up a mountain slope, rooms on the Beagle Channel side offer splendid views over Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel. Indeed, to see the dawn break over the Beagle Channel is quite an endearing sight.

Although the hotel is 2.5km (1.5 miles) from the town center, and 1.9km from the port, there are regular transfers operated from the town and airport.

The restaurant, with Beagle Channel views, has and cosy “old fashioned” style and food is contemporary. There is also an English style pub and beauty salon.

For relaxing there is a spa, sauna, hot tub and indoor swimming pool for adults and another for children as well as a squash court.

Hotel Simple Patagonia, Puerto Natales

Inspected By Experience Chile

Introduction

The Hotel Simple Patagonia is more or less what the name alludes. It is a “simple” hotel. Nothing flashy, nothing complicated.

About

The local family behind the Simple Patagonia had the idea to create a property reminiscent of the traditional Patagonian estancias, which are known to be spacious, open, yet comfortable.

From the outside the building looks like absolutely nothing. In fact, its hard to believe that there is anything inside, because the exterior is so plain. It is covered by wood panelling with small spaces in-between each panel. This is typical of Patagonia estancia construction as a way to break down the wind.

However, once through the front door the scenery opens up into a spacious lobby area, with dining room and lounge area, the end of which are high floor to ceiling windows that open up the stunning Patagonian landscape.

The construction is a mix of cement floors broken by natural wood, and white and wood-panelled walls that create a sense of cleanliness as well as cosiness.

Introduction

The Hotel Costaustralis in Puerto Natales is partnered with the Hotel Cabo de Hornos in Punta Arenas.

Each hotel is different; however, both are city-style hotels offering decent-level accommodation, restaurants and bar facilities. If you like the city style, then in Puerto Natales this is the hotel for you. The Australis is also positioned close to the waters edge from where one can enjoy a pleasant walk.

About

The Hotel Costaustralis, along with its sister hotel in Punta Arenas, the Cabo de Hornos, were designed, as the hotel owners say, “for the modern business and leisure traveller”.

Regarding Hotel Costaustralis, it is located in a central position in Puerto Natales, but also close to the water's edge, the “Fiord of Last Hope”. This means that rooms on the sea-facing side have a view to the fiord, whereas the rooms on the other side have a view to the town, including other nearby buildings.

The style of Hotel Costaustralis is that of a city hotel, with Patagonia-inspired interiors. Rooms are comfortable, offering moderate space, but well equipped.
